I notice recently there have been quite a number of people reading my review on The Siren I was wondering what is with it being so popular given the book has been published years ago, then I found out that The Siren has been republished with a new cover! It look so WAYYY…better than the first one. If you enjoy The Selection series which is also written by the same author, you might be interested in reading this book. That’s the part where I got to know more about Akinli and how he really felt towards Kahlen. My favorite part would be when the story shifted to Akinli’s POV for the last few chapters. This is where the story sounds a bit like The Little Mermaid but all in a good way. Then moving on to understanding the Ocean for what She did, for the next several decades but as her sentence/debt drew closer to the end (*18 years left*), she unexpectedly falls for a guy, Akinli. The story begins slowly, with Kahlen hating the Ocean for the first 32 years of her second chance life. As a siren, she have rules to obey – she can never get close to humans, obey any orders from the Ocean and sink ships once in awhile so that the Ocean gets “food” for 100 years (that’s how long Kahlen’s sentence/debt is). She was suppose to be dead 8 years ago when her family’s boat sank at the ocean but because Kahlen have had a strong will to live, the Ocean chose her to be a siren. The story is about a girl, Kahlen paying her debt for having given a second chance at life. The title might make you think it’s about mermaid when really it’s not. It’s a type of story that I’ve never come across before. Suddenly the life she’s been waiting for doesn’t seem nearly as important as the one she’s living now. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can’t bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own.
